Your Visits and Checkups

Keep your teeth and gums healthy. Smile with confidence.
The major reason to go the dentist is to keep your teeth in excellent condition. Your teeth are very important in chewing, speech and self image. Proper diet and adequate oral hygiene like regular brushing and flossing can help prevent most dental problems. For other dental issues, these may not be enough. A visit to the dentist will determine if a patient is at risk for dental caries (tooth decay or cavities) and other gum diseases.
What happens when I see the dentist?
Your first dental visit involves an overall physical examination of your teeth, gums and jaw and the tissues surrounding them. Teeth are cleaned and polished. They are checked for other potential problems. X rays are taken to diagnose problems associated with the structures of the teeth and jaw and to reveal cavities or pits that cannot be seen through visual examinations alone.
Prevent and Restore.
With the numerous advances in dentistry, one need not settle for discolored, missing or misshapen teeth. Dentists today offer many options that can help you maintain a bright smile, including professional tooth whitening and tooth implants and replacements.
How often should I visit the dentist?
Children and adults should go for check-ups at least twice a year. Those who are at greater risk for oral diseases (smokers, pregnant women, diabetics) may require more frequent dental check-ups.

Regular Dental Checkups
Why should you visit dentist on a regular basis?
You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to keep a healthy mouth. Regular dental visits are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. And in between those examinations, it’s important that you work to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. If you need additional help, your dentist may even suggest more frequent visits. A healthy mouth is a healthy body.
If you are considering skipping a dental checkup because of cost or another factor like time or dental anxiety, make sure to consider all the risks. What you might end up paying in the long run for not visiting your dentist will likely be much higher, both for your wallet and your peace of mind.
Here are some of the most important reasons why you should see your dentist regularly:
Plaque and Tartar:Even though you brush and floss regularly, there are still small areas in the mouth that are missed by a regular brushing and flossing. When this plaque builds up it solidifies and turns into tartar which cannot be removed with regular maintenance, only professional cleaning can get rid of it. Regular dental cleanings prevent tartar from eroding teeth or creating holes, which is how cavities are created. This can all be avoided with regular cleanings that take care of tartar before it becomes destructive.
Gum disease: Plaque and Tartar not only destroys the tooth but also the gums and the bone underneath leading to gum disease known as gingivitis, where the gum starts getting pulled away from the tooth due to the infection at that area. If untreated this infection not only destroys the gum but also the bone below it which leads of loosening of the tooth and eventually the tooth falls
Not only do specialists require more appointments and likely a blow to your wallet, but treatment of gum disease, depending on the severity, can include surgery, extremely deep cleaning, and medication. To avoid all of this, regular dental cleanings are essential in catching and addressing gingivitis before it gets out of hand.
Cavities: As previously explained tartar erodes teeth and leads to holes in the teeth known as cavities. Cavities rarely give any warning signs as they form, only resulting in a small ache once the tooth is already decayed. Once the damage has been done, you will have to go back to the dentist to have cavities and other tooth problems filled and fixed. Small cavities can just be filled and the health of the tooth can be maintained but if the cavities are left untreated this may lead to formation of bigger cavities which infects the tooth into the nerves leading to tooth pain and again a blow on your wallet.
